Projects developed
Organizations from several sectors have been using our technology to get ahold of hyperlocal air quality data and act through data-led initiatives.
Read about some of the successful projects we have been developing.
KINDERGARTENS
Nursery network (France)
SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
Indoor air quality monitoring in kindergartens
CONTEXT
Due to their physiology and inability to communicate their discomfort, and adapt their behavior, infants in nurseries are more vulnerable to the harmful effects of poor air quality. Respiratory diseases, allergies, and airborne viruses are more easily spread in environments where the air quality is not suitable.
Moreover, a high concentration of carbon dioxide has an adverse effect on the learning experience as it reduces memory and impairs concentration. By proactively monitoring air quality, nurseries will be able to improve the air their children are breathing through informed decisions.
Benefits
- Positively impact the health of children and staff
- Communicate - to both internal (principals) and external (parents) stakeholders - the efforts to ensure their children’s well-being
- Test the outcomes and become a model among the national kindergarten network
NAVIGATION COMPANY
Startup (Germany)
SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
Outdoor air quality monitoring in Munich
CONTEXT
Transport-related pollution is one of the leading air quality concerns in major cities.
Air quality can vary by as much as 800% between and within city streets - busy roads often concentrate two to three times more pollutants. Hyperlocal and real-time data on street-level air pollution is crucial to safely navigating high-traffic cities.
By using the information provided by PlanetWatch’s network, the startup will add a layer of environmental intelligence to its mobile app that, in turn, will help its users navigate Munich through the cleanest and safest routes.
Benefits
- Empower users to make informed decisions about their exposure to air pollution during their daily commute
- Incentivize users to minimize their air pollution footprint
HARBOR
Miami-Dade x Port of Miami (US)
SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
Outdoor air quality monitoring in Miami-Dade county
CONTEXT
Port activities constitute a significant source of air pollution and health concerns for the citizens in the surrounding areas.
Shipping vessels with combustion engines, that run on heavy fuel oil, are highly polluting. However, ports also contain a vast array of diesel-powered machinery (e.g. tractors, lifters, and carriers), as well as large amounts of bulk materials, that generate hazardous dust in windy conditions (e.g. fertilizers and wood products).
Health problems related to prolonged exposure to pollutants produced by such activities include respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer and premature death. These have a considerable impact on the well-being of both port workers as well as residents from Miami-Dade county.
Additionally, the Port of Miami also has construction plans for the upcoming years - an activity that will further contribute to the air pollution in the region.
PlanetWatch’s air quality monitoring solutions will allow Miami-Dade county to thoroughly analyze and act on the air pollution impacts of port activities as well as assess the influence of construction activities on the environment.
Benefits
- Analyze nearby community exposure to health risks derived from air pollution
- Identify pollution sources by port activity
- Measure the impact of construction activities on air quality
SCHOOLS
School network (Italy)
SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
Indoor air quality monitoring in schools
CONTEXT
Students spend hundreds of hours per year in classrooms. Assuring they have all the conditions to make the best out of their learning experience is crucial for their success. Yet, not enough schools look after the air their students and staff breathe.
Poor air quality has several effects on children, teenagers, and adults: it worsens allergies, boosts the possibility of airborne virus transmission, and increases the risks of severe asthma attacks and other respiratory diseases.
Moreover, a high concentration of carbon dioxide has an adverse effect on the learning experience as it reduces memory, impairs concentration, and lowers decision-making capabilities.
By monitoring air quality with PlanetWatch’s help, the Italian network of schools intends to protect their community’s health and ensure students have a safe learning environment.
Benefits
- Health protection of students and staff
- Set a new standard for indoor air quality in the whole province
- Enhance their students’ learning experience
LOCAL GOVERNMENT
Pays de Gex (France)
SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
Indoor and outdoor air quality monitoring around and within three public buildings
CONTEXT
Local authorities must set an example to individuals, companies, and public structures. This is especially important when it comes to looking after the health of the region’s community. In 2019 alone, clean air could have saved the lives of at least 178.000 EU citizens.
In partnership with PlanetWatch, local authorities are proactively monitoring the air around and within the town hospital, the government’s headquarters, and the startup incubator. By doing so, they are gathering valuable and useful information to put in place data-led environmental policies.
Benefits
- Bring innovation to the region and collect full-scale feedback regarding air quality
- Provide improved public service to citizens and companies
- Support local businesses
TOURISM
Amalfi Coast (Italy)
SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
Outdoor air quality monitoring in several towns along the coast
CONTEXT
In the aftermath of the pandemic, respiratory diseases, and thus air quality, are an increasing concern among travelers.
Air pollution is a threat to one of the world’s most touristy destinations: Italy’s Amalfi Coast. Although the coastline is filled with beautiful beaches and scenic villages, it is close to the big metropolitan city of Naples, which can ward off tourists looking to enjoy a healthy vacation.
By joining forces with PlanetWatch, local authorities can leverage air quality as a competitive advantage to promote the region, attract tourists, and act on air pollution hotspots.
Benefits
- Increase public awareness around air pollution
- Turn the region into a reference regarding air quality
